Installing your smoke alarm correctly and frequently making sure they’re working is essential to protect your family and home from fire. Based on the National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, there should be a smoke alarm in every bedroom, on every level of the house, and outside sleeping areas. Smoke rises, so these detectors should always be placed high on walls or ceilings and over ten feet from cooking appliances. The alarm should not be set at the top of the peak if your home has a pitched ceiling. Instead, detectors should be within three feet of the top but at least four inches from the peak. These alarms should never be painted over or covered.
